Where Have You Been? explores the "non-narrative" concept common within the experimental film genre. Specifically, this film abstracts formal narrative by subverting typical linearity and logic to allow the viewer's perception to shape the material. Relating to reception theory, and as proffered by David Lynch, a film takes on its own life after release, and by consciously choosing not to explain the film's intended meaning, space is left for the audience to interpret their own meaning. By subverting the typical narrative, procession, and rituals of a simple trip to the beach, the common becomes uncommon and thus requires the audience to question and answer themselves.
