Sorry for Laughing: Selected Works
Sorry For Laughing is the collaborative umbrella moniker for multi-instrumentalist Gordon H. Whitlow. Whitlow may otherwise be best known for the 40+ years he has been active in the long-standing Colorado experimental music institution called Biota, which itself is an outgrowth of the art collective called Mnemonists that preceded them in 1979.
One 1985 cassette initially arrived under the name Sorry For Laughing, with other members of Biota, in order to flesh out some of Whitlow's other instrumental ideas. When the pandemic hit in 2020, and Sorry For Laughing's sole cassette was reissued by venerable Austrian label Klanggalerie, Whitlow found himself with labelmates such as The Residents, Snakefinger, and Charles Hayward of This Heat, and with a green light to reignite the project.
Now in the wake of their 5th full-length out soon on Klanggalerie, Sorry For Laughing has had not only a revolving door of talented musicians contribute to this project, but also some regular appearances by heavy-hitters such as Edward Ka-Spel of The Legendary Pink Dots, Martyn Bates of Eyeless in Gaza, violin prodigy Patrick Q Wright, and Denver-based avant-guitar innovator Janet Feder.
Musically, the instrumentation can range from piano to organ to full string sections, but stylistically, Sorry For Laughing tends to weave together lush ambient passages with polished, almost baroque melodies, and yet a radiant experimental flair that, at times, seems to retain a certain youthful exuberance.
